"Guardians of Tradition"
Texas A&M University is best known for its rich traditions and the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets is the oldest of all Aggie traditions, as old as the university itself. The land grant system of colleges that gave Texas A&M its beginning mandated military training as well as academic education for all students. Therefore, the first forty students who arrived for classes in 1876 also became the first Aggie Corps of Cadets. Today, the Corps consistently produces more officers for the Armed Forces than any other Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) source.
Since its inception, the Corps has created and stood guard over many of the university's cherished traditions. These traditions include Bonfire, Yell Practice, Aggie Muster and Silver Taps. Thus, cadets consider themselves "Keepers of the Spirit" and "Guardians of Tradition."
