"125th Anniversary"
Texas A&M, the state's first public institution of higher education opened its doors on October 4, 1876 as the Agriculture and Mechanical College of Texas as a result of the Morrill Act of 1862, which establishes the nation's land-grant college system.

The name was changed to Texas A&M University in 1963 to more accurately reflect its expanding role as a leader in teaching, research and public service. The initials "A" and "M" no longer represent any particular words or curriculum since the university has grown to include schools of architecture, business, education, geoscience, liberal arts, medicine, science and veterinary medicine.
